|It is with deep sadness and hope in the resurrection that I inform you of the repose of the Rev. Theodore Atwood’s soul. While we gathered for in-person worship for the first time since COVID came to our shores this morning Fr. Ted completed his earthly journey. |
There is a beautiful symmetry to him holding on until we gathered together again, and for my first service with you all in a more usual setting.
Fr Ted was one of the first priests I got to know in the diocese when I arrived in 2017. He is a much beloved vicar of Holy Cross, having served from November 19, 2006 until June 30, 2010, a harrowing time for Holy Cross as it went through a schism along with much of the rest of the Episcopal Church over issues of human sexuality.
Fr. Ted welcomed and loved so many of us who are still here, regardless of sexual orientation. Those of us who knew him probably still have a part of our brain where his vibrato echoes with laughter and care. While no plans are made for his memorial as yet, his daughters will be in touch as they decide what’s next. Regardless, our Eucharist next Sunday will be said in honor of his repose.
May the souls of the faithful departed through the mercy of God rest in peace.
|Into your hands, O merciful Savior, we commend you servant, Theodore.Acknowledge, we humbly beseech you, a sheep of your own fold,a lamb of your own flock,a sinner of your own redeeming.Receive him into the arms of your mercy, into the blessed rest of everlasting peace, and into the glorious company of the saints in light. Amen.|
Rest eternal grant to him, O Lord; And let light perpetual shine upon him.
May his soul, and the souls of all the departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.
