We Care Bags for Meals on Wheels

Look with mercy, O God, on all whose increasing years bring them weakness, distress, or isolation. Provide for them homes of dignity and peace; surround them with loved ones who will listen; guide them to skilled and understanding caregivers; and as their physical strength diminishes, increase their assurance of your nearness and the willingness of others to help. This we pray to You, who has taught us to care for the poor and the widow alike, and to love our neighbors as ourselves. Amen.

outreach ministry leaderTo support the independence and well-being of seniors, Meals-on-Wheels Greater San Diego, Inc. is committed to reducing the isolation experienced by so many https://www.meals-on-wheels.org/.  Meals are delivered to seniors’ homes by volunteers.  Frequently the volunteer may be the only person the senior sees all day, providing human contact and a safety net, particularly for those who live alone.

Since 2007, Holy Cross has provided first-time Meals-on-Wheels clients in North San Diego County with welcome bags (We Care Bags). Each month, a ministry leader makes the custom bags, fills them with small personal items for men or women, and delivers them to the MOW headquarters in San Marcos. Meals-on-Wheels volunteers then deliver the We Care Bags to first time clients, along with their first meal. Although we don’t meet the people who receive the bags, over the years, we have learned that We Care Bags offer a sense of caring and connection to those who are losing independence.

Mary Lou Vanderpool and a small team of volunteers have led this ministry for eight years. Mary Lou welcomes both donations of items or money, and help in preparing the monthly bags. To Holy Cross, she has written “Thanks to donations from all of you, I feel like Santa when I deliver the We Care Bags.” Thank you for making this outreach such a success.

If you’d like to make a financial contribution, please donate to the We Care Bag Fund at Holy Cross Episcopal Church in Carlsbad at www.Faithstreet.com, make a check payable to Holy Cross, designating We Care Bags on the memo line – or put cash in a similarly marked envelope.
